Server Requirements

If your business has more than one computer that needs access to the ManageMore Business software at the same time, then you will need a server to manage a ManageMore multi-user version of the application. There are several decisions to consider when determining what is the best course of action for implementing a multi-user license. These considerations include:

  • How many users/ stations will require access to ManageMore Business Software at the same time?
  • Do you have your own IT staff or are you experienced with implementing/managing a computer network?
  • Will your business have remote branches/offices/locations that require access to the ManageMore Business Software?
  • How critical is uptime for your business? (i.e., If your server went down, how costly would it be to your business and how long could your business operate under manual means while a server is out for repair? )
  • Do you already have a computer server and network infrastructure in place?

We strongly recommend you contact ManageMore sales for an accurate assessment of your server needs.  In general, the simplest, quickest, and most cost-effective option today is to outsource your server to a Server Hosting Provider who specializes in cloud-based server plans.  With the availability of high-speed internet everywhere and the lack of IT personnel in small-to-midsize businesses today, most companies have turned to this cloud computing concept (formerly referred to as virtual computing or thin client computing) as a flexible alternative to yesteryear in-house server management.

Benefits of cloud computing technology include:

  • 99% server uptime (computer maintained with power failover, redundant bandwidth, redundant hardware, and 24/7 onsite assistance)
  • Enterprise level facility (i.e. your server is protected from accidental/environmental catastrophes like fire, flood, hurricane, earthquake, theft, etc.).
  • Quick setup, implementation, and scalability... all you need is internet access
  • Access all your applications (not just ManageMore) from anywhere in the world
  • Automated daily/weekly system backups can be implemented easily
  • Cost effective when you consider the alternative expenses of initial hardware costs, incidental repair costs, monthly electrical costs, and monthly bandwidth costs
  • Reduced power consumption by up to 80%

For more information on this technology, you can visit infinitelyvirtual.com

For those businesses that still prefer the traditional in-house server strategy, the following specifications are provided:

  Network/Server Requirements
Server Configuration Minimum Recommended Comments
Server Memory 1 GIG RAM 1-4 GIG RAM  Depends on OS used and number of stations accessing the server.
Server OS MS Windows 2003/2008/2012 Server   Both 32-bit and 64-bit OS versions are compatible
Computer CPU Intel Core2; Intel Xeon; AMD Phenom; AMD Athlon any Dual Core CPU or better Depends mostly on company size.  Most computer servers built after 2002 will run ManageMore.
Hard Drive Space 500 MB Available 5-10 GB Available Depends mostly on company size

NOTE: The use of a wireless network to connect stations to a server is strongly discouraged.

Remote Connectivity Requirements

The following information is for those businesses that want to employ their own in-house server strategy and need to link remote branches/offices/locations together to run a ManageMore multi-user license.   A remote connectivity (i.e. thin client) software solution and some additional hardware is needed to bridge remote and local computers to one central server.

In general, unless you have IT staff or a computer consultant to assist, we recommend you consider the outsourced server solution mentioned under the Server requirements section above.  The table below outlines the different thin client technologies known to work with ManageMore.

  Remote Connectivity Requirements

Microsoft Remote Desktop Services (formerly known as Terminal Services) www.microsoft.com

Purchasing under Microsoft's Volume Licensing Agreement:

5  RDS CAL at $425

Note:  You must already have a licensed Microsoft 2008/2012 Server Edition before purchasing RDS CAL licenses.

RECOMMENDED
Pros:
Technology already comes integrated into Microsoft 2008/2012 Server Edition software and provides fastest overall performance.  One server can handle multiple remote connections.

Cons: Some expertise required for setting up. Best handled by trained computer consultant.

LogMeIn PRO www.logmein.com $13/month per pc

Pros:  Inexpensive and simple to implement for businesses.

Cons:  Requires dedicated PCs for each remote connection and has limited remote peripheral support.  3 + remote connections should  consider MS Terminal Services.

GoToMyPC www.gotomypc.com $13/month per pc

Pros:  Inexpensive and simple to implement for businesses.

Cons:  Requires dedicated PCs for each remote connection and has limited remote peripheral support.  3 + remote connections should  consider MS Terminal Services.

PC Anywhere www.symantec.com 1 CAL* at $50

Pros:  Inexpensive and simple to implement for businesses.

Cons:  Requires dedicated PCs for each remote connection and has limited remote peripheral support.  3 + remote connections should  consider MS Terminal Services.

*CAL refers to Client Access License and represents the remote pc that will need connection to your host server.

Cloud-Based Server Recommendations

What is Cloud Computing (aka Virtual Server, aka Cloud Server)?

Cloud computing is the delivery of computing and computer data storage as a service to a community of end-recipients. It is best visualized as a form of "outsourcing" your computer system. The cloud providers manage the infrastructure and platforms on which the applications run. You access the cloud-based applications through a web browser or a light-weight desktop or mobile app while the business software and user's data are stored on servers at a remote location (referred to as a Data Center).

Cloud computing falls into three broad service models, Infrastructure-as-a-Service(IaaS)., Software-as-a-Service(SaaS), or Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS). For purposes of ManageMore, we require an IaaS Provider.

Selecting a qualified IaaS Provider is not always that simple.  There are many different Pro's and Con's between one provider and the next.  As is often the case, you get what you pay for in terms of cloud-based computing service.  You should research the hosting provider's data center and their included services.  Common things to ask include:  Do you charge me a flat monthly rate for the cloud service?  Are all of the Microsoft OS licensing included in the monthly fees? What level of technical support am I getting? Is my cloud server fully scalable? Are you handling automated backups of my server? What server specs are included? How much included internet traffic usage am I allotted and what are the additional fees if I exceed this minimum traffic allowance? Am I provided with a web-based customer portal that gives me full control of my cloud server 24/7 (e.g., server reboot, configuring of CPU cores, HD space, RAM, etc.)? Does your data center maintain multiple power feeds, fiber links, dedicated generators, and battery backups? How large is your data center and how many servers are you currently managing? How many separate data centers do you currently operate and which ones are closest to me for optimal traffic volume and speed? All of these questions can be an important factor when selecting a provider to host your server.

For your consideration, we have provided a select list of IaaS Cloud providers for your consideration:

Cloud-Based Server specifications will depend on the number of users that will be connecting simultaneously to the clousd server. The following is a general guideline for a 10-user hosted cloud server:

1. Windows 2008 R2 Server or Windows 2012 Server with Terminal Services Role
2. A minimum 2 x 2.0 Ghz CPU core powered cloud server
3. Two Gigabytes RAM
4. Minimum 20 Gigabyte local storage based hard drive space
5. Minimum 500 Gbps monthly internet data traffic usage included
6. Printing to a local station from a cloud server can sometimes be difficult due mostly to printer manufacturer drivers not always being up to date with cloud-based technology.  For this reason, we urge clients to consider Hewlett-Packard and Epson printer brands for the most trouble-free implementation.
